Machine learning model that can sort images
Natural Language Processing 7
Machine learning model that can recognise natural language commands
Recommendation Systems 6
Machine learning model that can recommend the reading age of a book based on data about the book
Decisions and Ethics 4
Presentation or report summarising key points
Machine Learning Algorithms 12
In this session we will be looking at some of the algorithms that make machine learning possible.
(Optional) Python and Orange 3
Data visualiastions using Orange Python code for importing data and running machine learning algorithms (decision trees and kNN)
Self driving cars
Machine learning can be used to develop decision making algorithms for self driving cars. Watch this video The ethical dilemma of self-driving cars (4 mins 15s). What are the potential issues with this?
Log on to moralmachine.mit.edu and select your response to each of the scenarios. When you have completed this task use the card sort activity to decide with other students which factors are the most important in the decision making process. Should these decisions be programmed in advance?
Extension – video (13 mins 36s) – What moral decisions should driverless cars make?
Which of these factors are most important to your team? Discuss with other students and rank these factors in order of importance. Are there any other factors that should be built into the decision making process?
Saving more lives
Is it important to minimise the number of people or animals killed?
Is it more important to protect passengers than pedestrians?
Upholding the law
Should preference be given to those obeying the law e.g. those crossing when the green light is showing?
Should you avoid changing the direction of the car?
Is it more important to save males or females?
Is it more important to save human lives than animals?
Is it more important to save young people or old people?
Is it more important to save people who are physically fit?
Social value preference
Is it more important to save a doctor than a criminal?
- What do you think are the most important factors for the self driving cars decision making algorithms? Do the rest of your team agree?
- What would happen if these decisions were not pre-programmed?
- Is it morally or ethically right to pre-program these decisions? Explain you answer
